  • Say hello to the newest order picker at Loblaw's Cambridge distribution centre.

Yep, I got the job. I got up early to go to the interview before work.
He asked a bunch of questions and gave me a little quiz paper (some
basic math, a dyslexia screener, and some spatial stuff). We talked
about why I might want this job, etc... So now I'm both happy and
scared. I'm happy that the job hunting is over, and that we're going to
be able to start reversing this downward financial spiral (though I'm
still only going to be making a couple hundred dollars a month above our
    basic bills).

I'm scared for a couple of reasons, and they're related. They have to
do with the timing of the shift. Turns out that day shift (on which I
will be) is 6am-2pm. My loyal readers will no doubt have noticed that I
am a distinctly nocturnal person. I like being up at night, and I find
it really really really difficult to go to bed any time before 1am. But
now I'll have to get up between 4 and 4:30 every morning. That scares
me. The other problem is that the buses don't run that early, so I have
no way of getting to work. It's a 25-minute drive from here, so not at
all walkable. I would have to leave at midnight. For the time being, my
mother-in-law (who must be bucking for a sainthood or something) has
agreed to get up at that ungodly hour and drive me, until I can find a
    carpool or something.

Anyhow, I'm beat, so I'm off to bed. Only one more day at my current
job, since this new one starts Monday! I'm going to miss a lot of
things about this job I have now, but the change is necessary. Thanks
for your kind wishes. I know that some of you wish better than this for
me, but I think this is an unavoidable step along the road to better.
We'll see if I can survive without having to beg to be transferred to
    the afternoon shift

    Take care
    -J-

  • Good luck with it. I know what you feel about the early mornings. I can handle getting up at six--but anything before  that leaves my ears ringing and my brain groggy all day. What a MIL you have!

  • Congratulations on the job.
Hope you get the logistics straightened away.
Those hours would never be feasible for me.
I'm definitely nocturnal. Mornings are not my game.

  • I'm sure you'll be able to get something worked out. You're really good at landing on your feet.

    Congratulations on getting the job!

  • Congradulations! I'm so glad you got the job, now you can start rolllllllllllling in the money.

  • Congrats on getting the job. Hopefully you'll be able to work through the ungodly hours. If nothing else it's good money that enables you to get some of your debt resolved in some form or fashion and in the end the sacrifice is probably worth it. Take it from me--I hate my job but the money's too good to go anywhere else. Once I have my debt paid off however I'm gone...

Anyways again congratulations on the job and I hope that you're able to figure out how to get there and back.

  • those hours are bloody uncivilized... I have the same wake up time when I tech for the morning show.  Thankfully it's an occassional position.

  • Good luck in your job and if I see you on line 1am your time, I'll flame you!

  • Hope you are enjoying yourself and that your mother-in-law is still cheerful in the morning (really good m-i-l).

  • Congratulations on getting the job!  Thanks for stopping by my site and helping me see the positive side.  I don't know that I would have found it funny that day...

  • hi and congrats! after all that hoopla i made about abc's "lost" i missed it last nite! good luck with the earlybird hours.. hopefully you'll be able to find a carpool =)

  • Thats wonderful news!!! YAY!

I can relate about the sleeping thing though- I had the same problem, however I will say this... the first month is hard, and then eventially your body becomes so tired from not having enough sleep, you fall into the sleeping earlier pattern.

I miss my late nights as well, but I enjoy being on a schedule that seems to be normal. I'm sure you will eventially convert and see, like I have, that its not so bad.

Definately hard at first though. I reccomend cutting out ALL caffiene while attempting this stunt, and planning a shower in the morning before work so that you are conscious upon arrival.

    (those are my tips..hehe)

Best wishes and good luck. You deserve all the best and your patience and hard work has paid off!

  • ...i'm not gonna say congratulations because everyone else already did...i need a job...

    !yellow snow!

  • Thank you for dropping by...you may not celebrate Christmas but I will wish you a happy life instead

  • Congratulations on getting the new job! I'm sure you'll manage to work things out regarding the time schedule. At least you have the temporary solution and it will buy you time to look into a more permanent one. I too sometimes find it hard to get up early, but once you get into a habit of it, it won't seem so difficult after a while.

Thank you so much for your kind congratulations: I do appreciate it! I am sorry I haven't been around much lately. To answer your question, no, that is not my cat, just a humourous photo someone sent to me through the e-mail. Once you receive your driver's licence, you must makethe trip to Toronto!

Good luck to you for the coming wekk: I hope all goes well! Talk to you again soon!

  • haha... say hello to the new DNTO freelance comedy correspondent.

  • I'm so pleased to hear you got the job. Let's hope things will be turning in a more gentle direction for you and Crista this coming year. I know there is much fruit in the adversity, but there also needs to be a season of rest and enjoyment to make it all work. My best to both you and Crista.
